The Microsoft 70-271 exam is the first of two steps in satisfying the requirements for the new Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician (MCDST) on Microsoft Windows XP certification. This exam is targeted to IT professionals who support end users who run Microsoft Windows XP products in a home or corporate environment.

This exam covers a broad range of topics relating to Windows XP. Candidates expecting to achieve high scores on the 70-271 exam must be knowledgeable in methods for resolving operating system issues by telephone, by connecting to the system remotely, or by visiting the end user's desktop. A working knowledge of workgroup and Active Directory domain environments, as well as the differences when managing Windows XP products in each environment, is required. Knowledge of the applications that are included with the operating system, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer and Microsoft Outlook Express, as well as the productivity applications used in a corporate environment, such as Microsoft Office applications, is also required.
