Important Exam Information and Objectives
The 70-216 exam is widely regarded as more difficult than its corresponding NT 4.0 exam. This exam expects you to take Windows 2000 Server to a higher level by configuring a network of multiple computers. You are required to understand the technologies behind networking computers and making them perform smoothly within the network.
One of the most challenging skills required is IT subnetting, for which standards continue to evolve. The 70-216 exam introduces new technologies such as virtual private networks and IPSec (Internet Protocol Security). Network Address Translation and Certificate Authorities, while not as new, are covered more extensively in 70-216 than in any of Microsoft's earlier releases. DNS and WINS are among the 70-216 objectives that build on concepts covered in earlier releases.
If you are coming from an NT 4.0 background, you will find that this exam builds on NT 4.0 in areas such as printer management and NTFS compression. Many of the objectives for the Windows 2000 exam overlap and build on the concepts familiar to NT 4.0 certified candidates, such as unattended installation.
Your NT 4.0 history can work against you in this exam. For example, the Windows 2000 approach to TCP/IP Subnetting relies on a new set of standards different from those used in NT 4.0. If you are NT 4.0 savvy, pay special attention to the Windows 2000 TCP/IP explanation. Many of the distractors (incorrect options) presented in the exam draw on obsolete information from NT 4.0. If you choose your answers based on NT 4.0, in many cases you will be incorrect.
